Breaking Barriers
2017

2017 is the 100th anniversary of the independent Finland. Off/Balance celebrates
the anniversary year and the year’s chosen theme Together via a collaboration
project with Jyväskylä City Theatre.

Breaking barriers 2017 is a series of artistic workshops and performances that
dignify communality and self-creation and that combine different art forms as well
as involving and communal art. Project consists of eight mini performances and
workshops in municipalities across Central Finland during 2017. Workshops are
held by actors of Jyväskylä City Theatre and the choreographer of Off/Balance.
Project gives a voice to different groups: children, disabled, unemployed, youth,
elderly, and immigrants are involved. The encounter between the artists and local
participators generates the themes for mini performances. The contents of the
performances come from participants’ experiences, current issues or e.g. local
history.

On 26 Nov 2017 the mini performances and participators are gathered to Jyväskylä City Theatre at Gallery Central Finland -festival.

“Swifts don’t make these flights alone. They ascend as flocks every evening before singly drifting down, while in the morning they fly up alone and return to earth together. To orient themselves correctly, to make the right decisions, they need to pay attention not only to the cues of the world around them but also to one another.” – Helen Macdonald, Vesper Flights, 2020
